Athletics

Our approach to athletics is simple:
We seek to glorify Christ

At Westminster, we believe that athletics is something that God uses as a means of grace and a tool for discipleship in equipping our children in many ways:

  • To be stewards of the different gifts God has given to us and to enjoy the particular glory each individual offers to Christ,
  • To value and love excellence because we should only offer our best to God,
  • To compete with integrity and with honor,
  • To experience the deep satisfaction or the fun that comes from performing a skill well, in competing, and in running and shouting with teammates,
  • And to embrace discipline and diligence when their end is to serve Christ in every area of life and to reject them as vehicles for vain self-promotion.

The Westminster School thinks of their athletic program as an extension of the classroom.  Pursuing truth, beauty, and goodness in all areas of life, even in the athletic arena, is inherent in all that we do.  The administration and the coaches developed three guiding principles that are communicated to the athletes at every opportunity.

1)    Play a role

Playing a role is difficult in a culture that only celebrates the “best” or the most colorful, yet God has designed each of us with specific gifts that are best used in submission to His will and for the good of His kingdom.  Learning how to be the best rebounder, or defensive player may not make the headlines, but neither does being a responsible employee, or a great prayer warrior.  Learn to play your role.

2)    Express your faith in the arena

While the word “arena” was not a favorite among Christians in the Roman Empire, they entered knowing that it was their faith and not their courage that was being tested.  Westminster athletes are given opportunities to share their faith with the world through their preparation, discipline, intensity, restraint, and sometimes their words.

3)    Master the sport

Mastery in Mathematics or Latin is no different than mastery of the fundamentals of a given sport.  This is traditionally the area that appears in the coaches’ and athletes’ mind as they think of athletics.  It is undeniable that this is important, but it is not the sole purpose of athletics at Westminster.
